It’s NOT just DUI deaths we work to prevent. THIS is a PERFECT example of why there needs to be stiffer sentencing for ALL vehicular homicide cases. This guy had a chance to redeem himself after his extremely negligent driving killed an innocent person. A year. A year suspended. IF he is convicted THIS time he might have a year added to his sentence. OF that year, he may actually serve seven months for killing someone.
I had occasion to talk with King County DPA Freeheim last week, asking about the possibility of Prosecutors supporting a bill this session to increase the VH sentencing guidelines to the same level as first degree manslaughter. After we discussed this issue I told her how shocked WE were when we met with the prosecutor after Sheena and Tony were killed and he told us what the defendant was likely to be sentenced to, best case scenario. I then asked her what it was like to sit in a room and TELL that to a family. She paused and said, ” It’s the hardest thing I do in my job”. Not for long Amy.
