As many of you may know, Sheena’s favorite color was blue and she LOVED frogs. Those of you who have joined us at celebrations of her spirit were gifted Sheena beads or a choker that I made for you. THIS is the last set of those beads. I was saving them for a special offering to someone who honored US and Sheena’s spirit. Governor Inslee did that during the press conference. SO, I gave these beads to his Communication director along with a little note of explanation.
Here is the text of the note:
Sheena LOVED frogs and her favorite color was blue. On the second anniversary of her death we had a bunch of her friends and families over to honor her spirit and memory. I made a bunch of these necklaces and chokers to give as offerings to our guests. This is the last one.
I am an enrolled member of the Blackfeet Tribe of Indians. It is not just a custom, but required to make an offering to those who honor us. To NOT do so would violate centuries of my ancestor’s spirituality. I humbly request that you accept our offering. What you choose to do with our humble offering is up to you. Once something is offered and accepted, we leave it up to the one accepting the gift to with it as they please.
You showed such compassion to us when we attended your news conference. You understand this issue, you GET it. We were taken aback by all that happened that day. You treated us and Sheena’s spirit with such honor and dignity. It usually gets quiet in the car on the way home from meetings, committee hearings and such because it becomes clear why we do these things. This time when I asked Carol what she was thinking. She said that it was a magical day. You did that. We thank you.
Respectfully, Frank Blair
PS. You will notice that there is one red bead. This is not an oversight and I did not run out of blue beads. Whenever I make something of this sort as my relatives have for centuries, we always include one bead/item that doesn’t match the rest because only Creator makes things that are perfect. FYI.
